TitleJohn Rees of Tenby and the Maitland Trust
DescriptionAt the time of his death at the age of 53 on 24/02/1855, John Rees was a prominent citizen of Tenby and a Justice of the Peace for Pembrokeshire. He was probably that John Rees who had been baptised at St Mary's Church, Tenby on 02/12/1801, the son of Thomas Rees, sailor, and Ann his wife. Certainly in the census of 1851 he gives his place of birth as Tenby and on his marriage certificate he gives his father as Thomas Rees, though he is Thomas Rees esquire not Thomas Rees sailor. John Rees married a lady from Colchester by the name of Emma Brown on 11/10/1842 at St George's, Hanover Square, London. Both were over 40. They had only one child, a daughter whom they called Emma Knox. She was six years old when the 1851 census was taken in March of that year, at which time the family was living at Number 1 Lexden Terrace, Tenby. John Rees owned all of Lexden Terrace as well as other houses in Tenby and property in the parishes of Jeffreston, Loveston and Reynalton below which were coal deposits. In his later years he was sometimes referred to as "Captain" John Rees which suggests that he might have followed his father to see in his youth. This might also account for his late marriage

Emma senior survived her husband by some six years. She died at St Tropez in France on 07/11/1861. Her daughter was with her at her death as was a certain Mr Frederick Maitland. On the day of Emma senior's death Emma junior, who was only some 17 years of age, announced her engagement to Frederick Maitland and they were married on 21st July in the following year. The trust to which John Rees had established for his wife and daughter came to be known as the Maitland trust after Emma junior's married name. It was the firm of Evans, Powell and Mathias which administered the trust. Jonathan Rogers Powell did most of the work until his death in 1872 and thereafter James Eaton Evans and Edward Eaton Evans took over. Edward Eaton Evans seems to have been a guest at Mrs Maitland's marriage and in his later years regarded her as his oldest client. Mrs Maitland lived most of her married life at various addresses in London. She had six children and died on 13th June 1923 having survived her husband by more than 20 years.
