TitleThe Mathias Papers
DescriptionHenry Mathias of Lamphey, who joined the established firm of solicitors Evans and Powell of Haverfordwest on 1st January 1845, was one of the many sons of Charles Delamotte Mathias of Llangwarren in Jordanston parish who was Sheriff of Pembrokeshire in 1817. Charles' eldest son, and Henry's elder brother, Lewis became Sheriff of Pembrokeshire in 1856. By then he was known as Lewis Mathias of Lamphey as his father had in 1821 purchased Lamphey Court from the Owens of Orielton. Henry, as a younger son, had to fend for himself in the world and he chose the law as his profession. A much bigger collection of Mathias papers is to be found in the R. T. P. Williams collection under the reference D/RTP/MAT. Accompanying the D/RTP list is a family tree giving more detailed information on the Mathias family. There is an entry in the Dictionary of Welsh Biography which includes an interesting pen picture of Henry's grandfather David, the Moravian "labourer".
