TitleEdith Ellen Davies
DescriptionEdith Ellen Davies was the daughter of Henry Davies, auctioneer, land agent & town clerk, and his second wife Ellen née Devnall. Edith was reputedly born at Palmerston House, the home of her eldest stepbrother Henry Clifford Davies, and was baptised at Prendergast parish church on 27th December 1871. Henry Davies and his large family lived at Old Bridge, Prendergast. Edith may have attended a private school in Abergavenny as a teenager. In 1901, Edith was teaching music & art and living in two rooms at 98 Newport Road, Cardiff, with a friend Edith Walker, who taught English and mathematics. By 1911, the two women had moved to much bigger premises at 13 Dumfries Place, Cardiff. Over the years, Edith taught art in Llandrindod Wells, Penarth and Haverfordwest. Edith spent her later years at Cilwendeg Residential Home, near Boncath, where she died in 1968 aged 96. She was buried at Capel Colman church on 24th January 1968. An exhibition of Miss Davies's paintings was organised in October 1964 at the Masonic Hall in Haverfordwest by Mr George Mitchell, father of the donor of this collection.
