The Scotchwell Estate located in the parish of Prendergast was originally a farm on the outskirts of Haverfordwest and in the hands of the Surman family in the 1700s.  They sold to the Stokes family  in 1794.  John Lort Stokes of Scotchwell born in 1812 accompanied Charles Darwin on HMS Beagle as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.  Having survived being speared by a native and escaped being eaten by a crocodile he went on to command the Beagle and  ended his career as an Admiral.  Later the estate passed to the Samson family. She recounts how Robert (despite being married) flirted with the parlour maid, begged his mother to provide him & his wife with lunch each day and systematically tried to poison his mother with arsenic. The letter contains evidence from the chemist who analysed the liquid and the names of the witnesses - Charles Mathias [of Waterwynch], Edith Mathias, Mary Fell & Meggy Davies.
