Description | Sir Hugh Owen of Orielton the 6th Baronet was the only son of Sir Hugh Owen the 5th Baronet and his wife Anne or Anna, daughter of John Colby of Bletherston. The 5th Baronet died in 1786 when his son was only four years old. For a detailed treatment of the Owens of Orielton and their role in Pembrokeshire politics and society in the late 18th and early 19th centuries see Roland Thorne's article "The Pembrokeshire Election of 1807 and 1812" in "The Pembrokeshire Historian" Volume 6 1979. Sir Hugh Owen, on coming of age, contested the Pembrokeshire seat in the 1807 General Election amidst allegations that Lord Milford, the sitting member, had reneged on a promise to vacate the seat when young Sir Hugh became old enough to assume it. Lord Milford won and before Sir Hugh could fight any more elections he died on 08/08/1809. He was only 27 years old, unmarried and the last of the direct line of the Owens of Orielton. The little collection comprises mainly plans of Orielton land in Camarthenshire. Even though some are not signed it is clear that they were all drawn by H. Wakeman of Baker Street, London |
