Description | In volume XI of the Transactions of the Historical Society of West Wales there is an article by Francis Green entitled "The Fortunes of Leweston" which says all that needs to be said about the Fortunes of Haverfordwest.
From the papers I have been able to find out a little about the Burr family. Major Newton Barton Burr, the father of Harriet Sophia Burr, later Fortune, was the brother of Daniel Burr, a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Newton married Grace Eliza Cosby in Bombay, India. He seems to have died soon after Harriet Sophia's birth in or around 1776. Mrs Burr came to England and married Cuthbert Fenwick who eventually deserted her and ran off to India. Mrs Fenwick died in 1810. Daniel Burr appears to have had no children of his own because, Harriet Sophia, his niece, was his beneficiary on his death in 1802. Newton and Daniel were the sons of Sir Frederick Burr, or de Burr, or von Burr, of Worms in Germany, who died in 1790. He was either the son or grandson of a Daniel Burr who held land in Middlesex and Essex and who went bankrupt in 1728. Another Daniel Burr made a will in Amsterdam in 1676 |
