They sold to the Stokes family in 1794. John Lort Stokes of Scotchwell born in 1812 accompanied Charles Darwin on HMS Beagle as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Having survived being speared by a native and escaped being eaten by a crocodile he went on to command the Beagle and ended his career as an Admiral. Later the estate passed to the Samson family.
